Disco Scallop Potting is a novel technique of fishing for scallops that utilises their response to light (swimming towards it) instead of bait. These pots are modified crab or lobster pots, containing a specialist "Scallop Eye" with springless bars across a rectangular, rigid, entrance, and an artificial white light- a waterproof LED light. Since its development a few years ago this method is becoming more popular and Disco caught scallops are now available from many Cornish seafood suppliers.
Potting provides a novel and less environmenally risky method of catching scallops. It is also safer than diving for scallops. The impacts of mobile fishing gears is well known and this method not only provides scallops with less impact on the seabed but less bycatch of other unwanted species and lower carbon footprint. Find out more about disco potting at the fishtek website here.
